FINAL PROJECT (Cultural Relationship)
11/11/19 - 19/11/19 (Week 12-Week 13)
For the final of this module, we have to visualize our relationship with the culture by creating a work of design. So the guidelines are :
1. Go to a specific area, in KL.
2. Look into the place's history see the visual elements
3. Gather information
I decided to go out with my friends, and we went to Pasar Seni & KLCC. And I saw a lot of good & unique stuff around there. The great thing about Pasar Seni is the place built in 1888 and the building is still manicured and clean. It served as a prominent landmark in colonial and modern-day Kuala Lumpur. It served as a prominent landmark in colonial and modern-day Kuala Lumpur. By the 1930s the structure was further improvised.
So these are the pictures that i took in KL.
After i explore this all things, i realize that i like the art culture and it's very interesting to see & learn more. So i know what am i going to do.
First Work
I search on google for relationship to the culture and hopefully to help me get more inspiration for my work.
All of this picture related to our parts of body & face and they use mostly pattern for their composition so i decided to do it with my self-portrait. Because i'm thinking if we want to visualize a connection there will be some part of us that connects with something that we want to connect. This is my sketch idea for the first time.
After i considering which one will i choose to do, i decided to do the very left one with my face.
Then i'm using these patterns on this two pictures as my pattern & colours inspiration because i want it to be related to the culture thing.
Second Work
I wanted to explore more because i'm not too satisfied with this work, and i'm expressing my relationship with culture in other ways.
I'm going to use some of my picture that i took in KL to make it as a background of this work, use it as a collage materials and these are the pictures that i'm using.
At first, this is my final result (Fig 11.16) but after we do the critique in class, i got a feedbak from my friend & lecturer and they said maybe it's better if i'm not leaving an empty space so i made it no white spaces.

Culture is one of the aspects of our life that lives around us. Unfortunately, these days people forgot to appreciate the culture that lives among us. Especially, teenagers, today don't even care or even worse they don't know their own culture. I felt the same situation when these day we just focus & care about social media and too care about fake news that circulate the world. Unfortunately, people today are more concerned about taking care of other people's live than learning the beauty of culture. We cannot blame the technology that keeps progressing everyday we should aware and be wise in using technology.
Work 1 (Fig 11.11)
So for my work i visualize my relationship with culture. I'm not a person who knows well about culture, i know about my culture but not that much. After i spend a day in KL, i finally got to know and realize that culture are all around me and it's beautiful if we realize it. For my first work i drew my face with a shock face, and i drew a black sunglasses in my head, that menas all this time i was blinded by my inconvenience to the culture (Black glasses in my head) but when i open my glasses (Threw my inconvenience and enjoy the culture) i just realize that there are many kinds of culture in this world. The message that i want to convey is we should open our black glasses so we can see the wonders of this world and see how unique our differences are.
The Design Principles :
1. Pattern (Inspired by the pattern that I saw around KL)
2. Harmony (Combining elements)
3. Asymmetry (Between the face and the flower)
4. Dots (Background)
5. Direction (The blue lines)
6. Repetition (The Shapes, dots that repeats)
The meaning of this design almost similar to my first work, but this work shows more about my past and my future plan. So i seperate two parts of the paper for the left side it represent my past before i discover a lot of things & pattern in art culture. I used newspaper for the background and i illustrated it as ' Something that people don't care about nowadays ' , ' For some people maybe they don't need newspaper at all ' or ' old things that we almost forget it exist'. And i drew my eyes close because at the past i don't care and i don't wanna know anything about that stuff, i was thinking that these things are ancient. And the right side represent my future relationship with culture after i explore about it, i printed out the pictures that i took in KL and use it as the background and represent ' a lot of culture ' and my eyes are open in the right side that explain it have open my eyes and explore the culture and i wanted to know more in the future.
The Design Principles :
1. Asymmetry (Left & right side)
2. Balance (Between left & right)
3. Repetition (The pattern inside the picture)
4. Image (Background)
5. Harmony (Combination of the composition)
PROJECT 2 (Self-Portrait)
24/10/19 - 11/11/19 (Week 10-Week 12)
So for this project 2, we are required to make our own self-portrait after exploring KL and search for any inspiration & idea. I & my friends had explored the Ampang Park, KLCC and also Pasar Seni but actually, I just got the inspiration from the Ilham's gallery & the google. So here are my exploration & ideas. I inspired by some artwork that have been made. And i've been thinking about my personality.
And we have to ask ourself and the people that know us about ourself. So the questions are :
1. Who am I?
2. How has culture affect me?
3. How do others see me?
4. How do I see myself?
It's important to discover and know ourself first then do this project. So these are the result after asking myself & my friends.

This design is about myself that not everyone that knows me knows this. So this explains the two contrast character that I have. I'm a really messy person and that is my style, so I disagree when someone told me to do my art/design neat because I'm a very stubborn person & very wild. I hate when someone told me to do something that I don't like, but when comes empathy thing I'm the one who's going to stand up. The point is I can be very very evil but when comes good, I can be a very kind person. But somehow, even though I have a very evil thought I can limit myself because I grew up in a very good environment & culture where politeness is important & sharing is beautiful and I don't think I find it here because there is something different when i used to live in my hometown and i moved here.
The right side presents the kind, fun, good side of me and I choose the bright colours for that. And for the left side is my evil side and choose dark colours for it. The principles that I used is Harmony (For the colours), lines (hair), directions (Between right & left), Asymmetry, Repetitions.
Second Work
For this second work i decided to do with photography & photoshop and this pictures below inspired me.

Rationale
This work tells about my inside. Maybe if people just know me as 'Tabita' they'll see me as a very strong girl, confident, outgoing, etc but to be honest i'm really fragile inside. If someone knows me really well, they will know that i'm a very sloppy & mushy girl. My heart is very sensitive and soft. Even my mom always told me to be strong because you cannot grow if you're not strong. She always support me and motivate me not to cry & always be strong. But i always try to fix myself apart and try to always be strong. I cut my half part because it represent fragile, and my pose looks like a scary & strong woman. And for the background it represent happy me but i bring down the opacity of the picture so it shows the outside of me.
The design principles that i used are Monochrome (background), Opacity (background), A little bit pattern (For the Flakes of paper of my picture), Repetition (For the the pattern of my pants).

Harmony, Rhythm & Movement
15/10/19 (Week 8)
In this class, my friend present about Harmony, rhythm and movement, So we have to do this assignment with collage materials. So i bring newspaper, glue & magazine (I share it from my friend)
So i search for ideas & inspiration in google.

Dots, Line, Scale & Size
08/10/19 (Week 7)
For this week, the materials are just a pen or paint and A4 paper. After hearing the lecture, i felt interested to do it soon. I directly search for line & dots art on google. And i found many cool art there.

Alignment, Hierarchy, Direction & Perspective
01/10/19 (Week 6)
This week, we're going to do this topic's assignment with plastic / recycle things. I decided to bring my bottle and other recycle thing that i've collected during this week and bring it to the class. I got my inspiration from google and i decided to do alignment & direction.

Pattern, Repetition, Texture & Surface
17/09/19 (Week 4)
This week we learn about pattern, repetition, texture & surface. And as usual, we do the assignment based on the topic we discuss that week. So this week class, we do our assignment at class, and we have to bring any vegetables or anything that can be used to be a stamp. So i bring potato, watercolour and of course A4 paper.

Feedback
For mr first work, Ms.Sherry said it looks cute & interesting for the second work she said it's messy but looks interesting too. Then i ask a few friends too choose and give me a feedback from those 3 works. Then they choose the last work (Fig 4.6) because they said it looks good, like a pattern in a fabric cloths. Then Ms.Sherry told us to put our work in our table and let everyone gave us a feedback/critic. I got 3 good critics.

Symmetry, Asymmetry & Balance
10/09/19 (Week 3)
Our assignment is the same as last week, we do things according to the topic that we learn today. We have to make a symmetry or an asymmetry or a balance art in A4 paper and this time we finally can use watercolours. So i decided to do a random abstract pattern symmetry and play with the colour.

Ms.Sherry like the way i played with the colours. But after i consult with Ms.Sherry she said i should got idea or inspiration from the web/google and put it in the blog.
Gestalt
03/09/19 (Week 2)
Then Ms.Sherry told us to make a gestalt by using A4 paper and markers. But i found it so hard to get an idea. So i struggle a lot when i think about it. There are too many ideas in my head so i don't know what to maximize, and also i really don't know what to do while my process making this assginment.

For the first work Ms.Sherry said the background is too simple, maybe if i put or add something there would be better. And for the second work Ms.Sherry said that it looks weird that i put the border that way.
Contrast
26/08/19 (Week 1)
We were given the first assignment to make a contrasting art by using the black and white A4 paper, and Ms.Sherry told us that all assignments in the Design Principle class are going to use all A4 paper only. So I decided to make a simple artwork. 'Triangle' is the first word that came into my mind, so I just made a simple triangle by cutting a black paper that shapes a triangle and sticks it into a white A4 paper.
Feedback
Ms.Sherry said that ' it's okay ' to add typography and it's simple but ' it's okay '. But after I consult to Ms.Sherry by person she said that the final should be neat but my artwork is not neat/ the line is not straight.

LECTURES
Lecture 1: Contrast
26/09/19 (Week 1)
We began our class with the introduction to this Module ' Design Principle '. Then we learn about contrast, one of the principles in design. Contrast refers to the arrangement of opposite elements or something that being strongly different from something else.

Lecture 2 : Gestalt
03/09/19 (Week 2)
This week, Ms.Sherry explained about gestalt, Where the human eyes render visual objects by grouping similar elements. There are 5 types of gestalt :
1. Proximity : Nearness in space.
2. Similarity : When an object looks similar to others.
3. Closure : When an object is incomplete.
4. Continuity : The maintenance of continuous action.
5. Figure : The eye differentiates an object from its surrounding area.

Lecture 3 : Symmetry, Asymmetry & Balance
10/09/19 (Week 3)
In this class we discover about Symmetry, Asymmetry & Balance. Symmetry is when the element arranged in the same way both side. Otherwise, Asymmetry is the opposite of the symmetry, it's not the same at both side, and balance is the combination of symmetry and asymmetry.
There are 3 types of Symmetry :
1. Reflection

Lecture 4 : Pattern, Repetition, Texture & Surface
17/09/19 (Week 4)
So, this week my group presented about this topic. There's a few things that deliver to the class. First thing is type of pattern. There are 4 types of Pattern :
1. Meandering : Built on the repetition of an undulating line
2. Branching : Like trees, rivers, they branches out from a point.
3. Spiral : Winding in a continuous and gradually widening curve
4. Packing & Cracking : When things are packed, they start to deform or "crack
![]() |
| fig 4.1 : Types of pattern |
Types of Repetition :
1. Regular (Even) : Arranged in constant
2. Irregular (Uneven) : Not balanced
![]() |
| fig 4.2 : Example of regular & irregular |
Types of Texture :
1. Physical Texture : The patterns of variation upon a solid surface.
2. Visual Texture : The illustration of having physical texture.
3. Hypertexture : The realistic surface texture produces by adding small distortions.
