Protest Placard

Before we begin our final project, we were assigned to make a Protest board with our own design with a topic about ' Design ' & ' Society '. And the things that we're going to need are :

1. Five'-Seven' (feet) long stick (broomstick)
2. Card Board or corrugated board (A2 ish)
3. Single line Manifesto
4. Thick brush/Marker/Paint
5. Newspaper
6. Black Chinese ink
7. Glue gun

So the first thing that we should do is think about our manifesto line. And I'm thinking too many words.
Fig 1.1: Lines that I've made
1. No Art No Inspirasi
2. Kill em with Art
3. It is bored as F*ck Without Design
4. Be Wild! Don't lock yourself
5. Design don't ruined
6. No design life will be dull
7. Design makes society less shit
8. Creativity Gak bisa dibatasin!
9. Do arts don't war
10. Design <3 Social
11. Idea is our power

From that 11 lines, Mr.Shamsul choose 3 for me (numb 7,8,11) but then Mr.Vinod said just do the numb 7 'Design makes society less shit' but change it into 'Design makes the world less shitty' then i sketch it.

Fig 1.3: Sketch 2

After showing this 2 org my sketch, Mr.Vinod said don't make it too nice or beautiful, make it more like when we really want to do this protest. Just make it simpler.

Fig 1.4: Sketch 3
Then I made it simpler. (Fig 1.4) After that, I begin to put it into the board. I'm using a white marker & red marker.

FINAL PROJECT
06/11/19 - 20/11/19 (Week 11 - Week 13)

In this final project, it's all about Expression, Hierarchy and composition. We have to do it with all our past experience and exercises that we had before. We have to express typographically a social message (from the manifesto that we've made before in the protest board). We'll have to print out the poster into A3 and animate it on A4 size and we can just only use the 9 families that have been given to us. So the first thing I do is looking at what is the right typeface for my word 'Design makes the world less shitty'.

Fig 2.1: Typeface testing

After I dissect and look for the right typeface or which typeface are qualified for my manifesto sentence expression I decided to choose just 4 typefaces from the 9 families. And they are Serifa, Univers, Futura & Gillsands.

Fig 2.2: Serifa std, Univers std,
Futura, Gillsands

Then I'm sketching my idea. At first, I have no idea what to do so I just sketch for what I'm thinking right when I'm sketching it.

Fig 2.3: Idea sketch

Then I work it on Adobe Illustrator. And here are my process & progression of making these digital sketches.

Fig 2.4: Process
After showing these work to Mr.Vinod & Mr.Shamsul, they choose the one with the cool face & face with playing the tongue.

Fig 2.5: All of my digital sketch
Fig 2.6: The chosen one

But then they told me to change my sunglasses to circle eyes and they told me to change my colour for the emoji on the background (tongue & eyes).

Fig 2.9: Result after changing the
colour & the shape

Then I try to animate it.

I showed this to Mr.Shamsul and he said it's interesting but the animation is not smooth and he told me to make it smoother and maybe make the eye move a little bit.

I showed this again to Mr.Shamsul and he said ok but when I showed it to Mr.Vinod he tells me to change my colours into primary colours, try to make the eyebrows yellow and don't make the 'shitty' word disappear because shitty is good. I'm re-doing it then.

Fig 2.14: I Primary colours test

I was confused which one is the best one, I try to ask my friend and they choose the yellow eyebrows, light blue eyes & red tongue.

FEEDBACK

Week 10 (20/10/19)
General Feedback : We need to maintain our font size for each sentences and our naming of typeface should be 7pt and using the typeface Helvetica or Arial.
Specific Feedback: Don't make it too pretty for the placard, make it simple and don't make the design too good.

Week 11 (06/11/19)
General Feedback : Regarding our project 2, our typeface point size should be bigger because the idea of the layouts is to sell the typeface and for our blog Mr.Vinod reminded us again to make our pdf file public.
Specific Feedback: For the final project Mr.Vinod really agree with my manifesto word. I've designed some and Mr.Vinod like one of my design and he said it looks interesting and he likes the way I play with the words and the design. But then he told me to change the illustration that I've made (I've made sunglasses) to eyes.

Week 12 (13/11/19)
General Feedback : Use A4 file size for animation and A3 for the digitization. Because A3 is too big for the animation and for the resolution is 72 dpi.
Specific Feedback: Mr.Vinod told me to change the eye & tongue colour (for the illustration). Then i do my animation and ask for feedback to Mr.Sham and he said the animation looks good but it's not too smooth & add the movement to the eye. And after I re-do it again and show it to Mr.Shamsul he said okay and told me to ask Mr.Vinod and he said don't move 'Shitty' word, and just give a little movement to the eye and try a primary colour for the emoji.

Week 13 (20/11/19)
General Feedback : We should create a new post in our blog for the ' Final Compilation & Reflection ' and we put all our design result from week 1 - Week 13 (Exercise - Final project) and for the Reflection we have to think and read our reflection again and concise into 1 or 2 paragraphs.
Specific Feedback : After i change all the things that i need to change from the last feedback that Mr.Vinod gave me and i showed my work to Mr.Vinod accept my work but then Mr.Shamsul recommended me to move my animation's eyes a little bit more but then they give the decision to me if i want to change it okay but if i don't that's okay too.

REFLECTION

Experience :
Week 10: I've never made a protest board before and never think to do that ever, but suddenly we were assigned to made our own protest placard and i have no idea what is this and why should we do this? But after i join the event/ seminar about ' Trouble Maker Manifesto ' i get the point about this little knowledge that tuck in this exercise. And it's kinda fun after i done this exercise.
Week 11: My expectation about the finals is a nightmare and i'm afraid to face the final project but it turns out not that bad and i'm enjoying this final project process, even thought there's a lot of things to change and sometimes my lecturer told me to always improve my work but i know it's for my own good and my own self-improvement to be better and better.
Week 12: This was a bit struggling moment where you done things that you think it's okay for you but it's not okay for anyone else so you need to do things fast and you need to understand what you need to improve to make your work better.
Week 13: This week i felt more relax because we're almost reaching our very final semester and i'm happy because the struggle for this pretty heavy semester is goint to be over.

Observation :
Week 10: From what i observed, everyone in my class is doing a great job with their words and work, i thought this will be something really hard but it turns out not that complicated it just we need to know how to express our manifesto word.
Week 11: I saw a very very great work from my classmates but there's a lot of them struggle too about this project because their work were rejected but after that they rebound and make a great work too even thought some were rejected many times but overall everyone is doing a very good job i think.
Week 12: I'm glad to see everyone doing their work and express their idea by their own way even thought everyone looks tired and exhausting.
Week 13: From what i saw some happy with their work but some is not satisfied with their work.

Findings :
Week 10: I found that as a designer we need to practice ourself to always work fast & efficient and practice for our creativity so that we always ready for anything we were needed. By practicing this things we will get used to accustomed to work fast & not delaying.
Week 11: I realize that we need to focus on what we do or else we're not going to take the job seriously.
Week 12: I found that this week is really really tough because the more we work the exhausting we get and i think i realize my own style, i'm not really sure but it think i knew what my style is.
Week 13: When we enjoy our time and the process in making design work we will get the satisfaction and self-joy for ourself so just enjoy even thought it's going to be hard and tough you will get it and be the better version of yourself day by day.

FURTHER READING

Thinking with type by Ellen Lupton
06/11/19 (Week 11)

Fig 3.1 : Thinking with type book
I read about text in this book, and it says that text in typography is defined as an ongoing sequence of words, distinct from shorter headlines or captions. The main option is called 'body', comprising the priciple mass of content also known as 'running text'. So designers generally treat a body of text consistently, letting it appear as a coherent substance that is distributed across the text. As a designers we have to provide ways into and out of the flood words by breaking up text into pieces and offering shortcuts and alternate routes through masses of information. Althought many books define purpose of typography enhancing the readability of the written word, one of design's most humane function is to help readers avoid reading.

There's a quote by Roland Barthers in 1971 and he said, 'a text is a multi-dimensional space in which a variety of writings, none of them original, blend and clash'. Design is as much as an act of marking. There's a lot of work to do to be a designer is not as easy as i thought. We have to decide about the positive grain of letterforms and the negative gaps between and around. Spacing has become crucial, however, to the alphabetic writing which translate the sounds of speech into multiple character.

Typographic design: Form and communication by Rob Carter, Philip B.Meggs, etc.
13/11/19 (Week 12)

Fig 3.2 : Typographic design book

Capital and lowercase letters. If text is set entirely in capital letters, it suffers a loss of legibility and the reader is placed at a significant disadvantages. This kinda true because if type set in this manner severaly retards reading more so than any other legibility. A reader is not provided with the necessary visual cues that make words recognizable. But there's also the benefits if letters were written in all uppercase letters. Text set in all capital letters uses a significantly greater amount of space that the text set in lowercase letters of the same size. On the other hand, text set in lowercase forms words that are distinct, based upon their irregular word shape and internal patterns. Typographic texture and tone are affected by the spacing of letters, words and lines. Texture is also affected by qualities unique to the design of specific typefaces. Sometimes designers arrange type for specific spatials effects.
